Things to do in Malta - 'Voices 2012: Dream a little Dream'

‘VOICES’ is a popular concert, occurring every two years, which is held in aid of different local charities. These shows combine the best voices on the islands to create magical performances for everyone to enjoy. From classical songs to more upbeat and modern tunes, you’ll surely enjoy singing along to Voices.

VOICES is a completely non-profit organization and its concerts serve to raise money for charitable and worthy causes. None of the members of the VOICES choir, band or committee receive any form of remuneration for their services. To date, VOICES has contributed over one million Euros to various local and international charities including the Hospice Movement, Eden Foundation, Caritas, JRS, Cash for Cancer, YMCA, Fondazzjioni Suret il-Bniedem, Razzett tal-Hbiberija, Dar tal-Provvidenza, UNICEF, Amnesty International Red Cross International, UNHCR (Malta) and others.

The driving force behind VOICES is still the same as when the whole idea started – to bring young people together in a positive and creative environment, to offer good entertainment: and to be a voice for and aid to the underprivileged.

The first VOICES concert, with a choir of 75 singers, was held in June 1991 at St. Aloysius College in order to raise funds for the Jesuit Community towards the building of the new Sixth Form Complex. Due to an outstanding performance, a repeat performance titled “VOICES-Encore” was held between 11 and 13 October 1991 at the University Auditorium under the sponsorship of the Secretariat for Youth & Culture. This time, the proceeds of Lm 5,000 went towards the Youth Against Drugs campaign. Over the years, the number of choir singers grew to over 200 and concerts are now held every two years at the Mediterranean Conference Centre reaching a record audience of over 13,000 people during a run of 10 performances in 2008.

This year’s theme is ‘DREAM A LITTLE DREAM’ as dreaming is what has led to the most innovative, creative ideas man has ever come up with. For, it is only when we allow ourselves to let our imagination fly and not impose limitations on what we can or cannot do, that we can achieve our greatest success as people.

It was one man’s dream that led to the creation of VOICES now in its 11th edition – Louis Naudi dared to dream and today the VOICES Foundation is proud to carry on his idea which has flourished and grown from its very modest beginnings.

This year the VOICES committee invites all of those are able to attend VOICES to allow themselves to be inspired because it is never too late to let your spirit soar; it is never too late to dream.

The ten performances by the 200 strong choir and a live band will take place between the 3-7 and 10-14 October at 7.30pm at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

The Dragon checks in for the Chinese New Year

The Grand Hotel Excelsior welcomed the Year of the Dragon in style with a lavish Chinese Buffet under the auspices of the Chinese Ambassador to Malta H.E. Zhang Keyuan. The Hotel Lobby was decorated with authentic Chinese decorations which are a symbol of growth and prosperity.

On Monday 16th January the Dragon made a stunning entrance into the Grand Hotel Excelsior and checked-in on time for the Chinese New Year. For a whole week it proudly sat in the Hotel Lobby wishing the Hotel guests and staff a year full of prosperity. The 8 metre Dragon travelled all the way from China for its first Chinese New Year celebration in Malta.

VIP Guest for the month of January Chinese Foreign Minister Hon. Yang Jiechi welcomed by Mr. Grixti, Hotel General Manager, upon his arrival to the Grand Hotel Excelsior.

Chinese New Year, better known in China as the Spring Festival, is a time to welcome longevity, wealth and prosperity and to eliminate any negative events from the past. In Chinese tradition, each year is dedicated to a specific animal. The Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Rat, Boar, Rabbit, Dog, Rooster, Ox, Tiger, Snake, and Ram are the twelve animals that are part of this tradition. Each of these animals are thought to bestow their characteristics to the people born in their year. In 2012, the Dragon is welcomed back after the 2011 year of the Rabbit.

People born in the Year of the Dragon have a natural charisma and are certainly gifted with power and luck. Some famous personalities who were born in the Year of the Dragon are Michael Douglas, John Lennon, Al Pacino, Cliff Richard, Shirley Temple, Placido Domingo and Ringo Starr.

Chinese people may celebrate this feast in slightly different ways but their wishes are almost the same; they want their family members and friends to be healthy and lucky during the New Year.

Excelsior Hotel Malta introduces the new al fresco Tiki Grill.

Tuesday 15th June 2010, Malta – The aroma of fresh fish and the gentle grilling of sizzling Rib Eye steaks await the Excelsior diner while the creations of the Pastry Chef await their dessert.

This is the Grand Hotel Excelsior’s new Tiki Grill which, as its name suggests, serves up a menu that offers 7 sizzling grills including fresh fish, beef rib eye steak, Souvlaki chicken skewers in a traditional Greek marinade, traditional Turkish lamb kebabs, tuna and swordfish steaks marinated with aromatic seasoning and spices with Texas-style new potatoes, Maltese pepperonata with green peppers, tomatoes, olives and capers. There’s anti-pasti to start. And to finish, those Pastry Chef creations make it a 3-course meal.

The new Tiki Grill is to be found next to the Excelsior’s outdoor pool and the Marxamxett Harbour, for those diners who seek a venue that favours al fresco menu variety during those long summer evenings. There’s no need to dress up for these nightly occasions. Now that summer has started, the dress code is simply casual in anticipation of some serious wining and dining in the cool of the evening air. As an Excelsior spokesman stated, the dress code for Tiki Grill may be casual but the cuisine and service remains 5-star. Just across from the Tiki Grill next to the marina, the Excelsior’s very own Yacht Club is open for lunch and dinner with pizza and pasta and other light dishes. The Tiki Grill is open from 8pm till late.
