Next Saturday, 3 December 2011, all the Excelsior Santas – staff, guests and members of the public who wish to take part – will take a swim in the chilly sea or a splash in the pool to raise money for Puttinu Cares.

A donation of €10 from every swimmer will go to Puttinu Cares. The swim will also mark the opening of the hotel’s Christmas Village featuring Santa’s grotto, elves, a Christmas forest, the Yummy Shop, The Post Office, Christmas carols, stalls selling hand-crafted items and much more. The lights on the Christmas tree will be switched on on 1 December.

Grand Hotel Excelsior hosts Europe Direct Network AGM

More than 400 delegates were in Malta earlier this month for the three-day annual general meeting of the Europe Direct Information Network.

At Floriana’s Grand Hotel Excelsior, a number of high-profile speakers addressed the representatives of Europe Direct centres from all over Europe. The line-up included European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli, and European Parliament vice-president Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou.

There were interventions by European Economic and Social Committee vice-president Anna Maria Darmanin, Chris Said, the Parliamentary Secretary for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue, and the European Commission’s Director General for Communication, Jean-Pierre Vandersteen.

Europe Direct Information centres are present in all member states to inform citizens on EU policies and to handle queries on EU-related issues. Malta has two: one is hosted by the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin in Floriana and the other by Genista Foundation in Mosta.

The European Commission Representation in Malta was instrumental in bringing the AGM to Malta.

This year’s meeting discussed the centres’ work programme for 2012 in the context of the current European political scenario. Delegates exchanged ideas on ways to improve working practices and to enhance the added value of Europe Direct centres.

If you're looking for a City hotel in Malta for your next conference then this centrally located Luxury Malta Hotel at the doorstep of Valletta, Malta's capital city, is your choice. For more information about organising your conference in Malta contact us on marketing@excelsior.com.mt or on 00356 21250520.

Malta Weddings - Organising a Wedding at a time by Marika Azzopardi

Interview with the Grand Hotel Excelsior's Wedding Specialist

Would you trust a man to organise your wedding? Apparently if he is called Neal Debono and organises weddings at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, then you should. Personally, I was quite surprised to meet a man in this job which we have learnt to traditionally associate with a woman, perhaps also due to such romanticised movie themes as The Wedding Planner (2001).

Whilst a wedding is usually fundamentally a female affair, Neal’s acumen in this field has achieved quite a good reputation over the past years as he works as the Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta Weddings Specialist, offering not merely the service of organising a wedding, but also offering augmented services to booth. In his own words, “I absorb the pressure.” And as anybody who has gone through an own wedding knows full well, wedding preparations bring along quite a handful of pressures from different sources.

Neal was born in a family immersed in the catering business and started working on local events at the Grand Hotel Excelsior some three years ago. He believes that selling a wedding is not merely about selling the venue, but much more….. “You become part of the life and emotions of the couple at a very delicate point in time, when there are a lot of expectations to be lived up to. The largest wedding I have organised so far welcomed 1200 guests, whilst the smallest included only the bride and groom. The latter combination was a foreign couple and incidentally, foreign weddings in Malta are picking up pretty well within the local market and bringing in good custom.”

On average he dedicates a minimum of 16 – 20 hours to each couple prior to the wedding and it all starts with the viewing of the venue. Once the decision has been made to go ahead and book the wedding, he starts helping the couple work around their budget, meeting suppliers, discussing also such routine tasks as booking the church and choosing the decorations if need be. On the day he can spend up to 10 hours at a stretch including prior and post wedding.

“For the bride and possibly the groom as well, this is a lifetime dream. For the parents this is also a very special moment and some parents save up a lifetime’s savings to make their children’s weddings that much special. My responsibility is to spend that hard-earned money carefully, wisely and successfully.”

Has he experienced any surprises along the way? Neal ticks off a list – a wedding cake decorated with skeletons …. “the wedding had a rock music theme”; a wedding with 15 food stations … “they wanted to splash out”; weddings with boats sailing in/out of the hotel’s marina; fireworks. “There was even a request for a helicopter landing to deliver the bride but the permission for that was not granted.”

Where foreigners are concerned, civil ceremonies are the norm and for Neal this type of wedding is even more of a challenge. “With local couples you get to meet them and experience a first hand experience of their characters, what they want, their tastes and expectations. But with foreigners, the most you can get is an online conversation, otherwise it is all via email. I have to organise a civil ceremony, get the Registrar organised, the wedding organised, the guests organised and strive to make it as close as the bride and groom requested, without having them available to provide their personal go-ahead – sometimes they only see the hotel from the website….”

Although the Grand Hotel Excelsior is a Grand Luxury Malta Hotel with multiple venue sites wherein weddings can be held, the hotel limits the number of weddings it accepts every year so that individual attention is given to each wedding and to allow appropriate noise control within the hotel so as not to disturb other ongoing events. Having said that, Neal confirms that most Saturdays, and the peak season of May, June and July 2-12 are already booked up. On average we get some 20 requests every week but most have to be turned down although we’ve had cases where the couple decided to change the wedding date just to be able to have the event here.”

The Grand Hotel Excelsior has a number of beautiful venues in-house and out of doors to accommodate varied kinds of weddings. Indoors there is the Admiral’s Landing and the Grand Ballroom and the more intimate Executive Lounge. Outdoors the hotel boasts the Bastion Terrace, the Pool Deck and the smaller Rotunda Garden and Tiki Restaurant. It all depends on the number of guests and the type of eating and seating arrangements requirements.

For Maltese weddings, food is a very important factor. “There are varied options – food can be served in buffet-style, plated, semi-plated and accompanied by an open bar. We can create tailor-made menus to suit budgets, diets, preferences. All food items are produced in-house on the day and not earlier than 12 hours before the event. This means that food is handmade and perishable, whichever of our standard five menus are selected. For instance, we are very particular as to the freshness of our food and will not serve sushi in the hotter summer season. We have very strict guidelines where our fresh food policy is concerned and this has paid off as people appreciate our cuisine every time.”

Having married off couples as young as 21 and as old as 50-something, Neal feels very proud of his achievements in this field, but the biggest satisfaction is seeing each bride’s shining face on the day. “I’ve learnt that if the bride-to-be does not like the venue from the very first moment, then it’s a no-go. But if she does, then you’re trusted and you’d better live up to her expectations. When the bride has been married and the party’s over, the best thank you is a big hug and the joy in her face. I guess that just makes my day.”

Our experienced Weddings specialist at this Luxury Malta Hotel will help you plan your dream Malta Wedding. Should you wish to tailor make your special day contact Our Malta wedding planner on weddings@excelsior.com.mt or on 21250520.

Things to do in Malta - The Inquisitor's Palace

The Inquisitor’s Palace was erected in the 1530’s as the civil law courts of the Order of St. John soon after the Knights arrived in Malta.

Although its successive occupants changed much in the structure of the building, the Inquisitor’s Palace remains an architectural gem, representative of the chequered history and European heritage of the Islands.

The Inquisitor’s Palace is now home to the museum of Ethnography, focusing on the popular devotions and religious values latent in Maltese ethnic identity and culture up to the present day. Careful historical reconstruction of the palace is under way based on extensive research of documents in the Inquisition archives in Malta and at the Vatican. In addition to the display areas in the tribunal room, the prison complex and the kitchen, which are already restored, there is a permanent exhibition on the impact of the Inquisition on Maltese society. The exhibition studies themes such as the Eucharist, the Holy Family confession, preaching and the cult of saints.

Price for 2 to 4 persons: €150.00
Price for 5 to 6 persons: €170.00

The colourful fishing village of Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk Bay is Malta’s second largest natural harbour. It is the best place to see the colourful, traditional Maltese fishing boats, the Luzzus, with the mythical eye painted on their prows. The village is the Islands’ main fishing harbour; its Sunday fish market a fascinating insight into local life and a traditional industry. The stalls brim with the night’s catch - fish of all shapes, colours and sizes. The village itself has many good fish restaurants.

Marsaxlokk derives its name from the Arabic word marsa, meaning harbour, and Maltese for the southeasterly Mediterranean wind, the Xlokk (Sirocco in Italian). Marsaxlokk, with its sheltered harbour, was an easy landing place for pirates and the Ottoman Turks. It was here that the Ottoman Turks landed for an attack which ended in the Great Siege of 1565. Napoleon’s army landed here in 1798; and in recent times, the harbour was the scene of the Bush-Gorbachev Summit,1989.

The headland to the left of the Bay is Delimara Point. It has two attractive, secluded rocky inlets suitable for swimming: Peter’s Pool; and the furthermost part of the headland. Fort Delimara, on the west of the peninsula, was built by the British in 1881 to guard the entrance to Marsaxlokk Bay.

Price for 2 to 4 persons: 160 Euro, or
Price for 5 to 6 persons: 180 Euro.

Lampuki - A Traditional Maltese Dish

This month our Executive Chef, Roger Friggieri participated in a local competition called Chef’s Challenge. Roger was provided with four items including the “lampuki” with which he had to create something special.

The lampuka is Malta’s most popular Autumn fish, with its delicate and coveted meat ready to be prepared in a variety of ways. The lampuki season, which starts at the end of August and runs well into November, brings out early-morning hawkers with their typical cry of “lampuki hajjin” (which means ‘lampuki alive’), plying their fresh wares to the Maltese housewives.

This particular fish, also known as the dorado or mahi-mahi, migrates past Malta and Gozo during the late Summer and Autumn. The local fishing technique used is rather particular. Palm fronds are cut and woven into flat rafts, which are then taken out to sea by the fishermen aboard their luzzu boats. The raft is put into position and left a while. Once the sun is high in the sky, the frond rafts create a lovely shaded area, which the lampuki find hard to resist. Sheltering under it in large shoals, the lampuki are then quickly caught with surrounding nets, to be then sold early next morning on the Maltese market. This method, known as kannizzati, has changed little over the past two millennia.

The Maltese Cross

Introduced to Malta by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem upon taking possession of the islands in 1530, the Maltese Cross has become an intrinsic part of Malta’s culture and heritage, as well as a much-cherished symbol by the Maltese.

The Maltese Cross formally adopted by the Knights Hospitallers of St. John in 1126, stylistically owes its origins to the crosses used in the crusades, when it was identified as the symbol of the “Christian warrior”: Its eight points denote the eight obligations or aspirations of the knights, namely “to live in truth, have faith, repent one’s sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, be sincere and wholehearted, and to endure persecution”. With time, the eight points also came to represent the eight “langues” (literally “tongues”, but in effect national groupings) of the noblemen who were admitted to the famed order, namely those of Auvergne, Provence, France, Aragon, Castille and Portugal, Italy, Baviere (Germany), and England (with Scotland and Ireland). The Maltese cross remains the symbol of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

The link between the Maltese Cross and these islands was forged with the Knights’ arrival in Malta in 1530. By then, the Cross had become the established symbol of the Order, and as the Knights set about putting their stamp on these islands through their inspired architectural feats and patronage of the arts, so the Maltese Cross provided the signature to this glorious legacy. The Cross found itself on coats-of-arms, palaces, hospitals, the entrances and gates to various forts and towers, on fortifications as well as on coins, cannon, monuments, churches, paintings and frescoes, furniture, silverware and jewelry.

A selection of souvenirs including thimbles, magnets, baseball caps, lighters and pendants featuring the Maltese Cross are available at the Grand Hotel Excelsior's Gift Shops.
