More than 400 delegates were in Malta earlier this month for the three-day annual general meeting of the Europe Direct Information Network.
At Floriana’s Grand Hotel Excelsior, a number of high-profile speakers addressed the representatives of Europe Direct centres from all over Europe. The line-up included European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli, and European Parliament vice-president Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou.
There were interventions by European Economic and Social Committee vice-president Anna Maria Darmanin, Chris Said, the Parliamentary Secretary for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue, and the European Commission’s Director General for Communication, Jean-Pierre Vandersteen.
Europe Direct Information centres are present in all member states to inform citizens on EU policies and to handle queries on EU-related issues. Malta has two: one is hosted by the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin in Floriana and the other by Genista Foundation in Mosta.
The European Commission Representation in Malta was instrumental in bringing the AGM to Malta.
This year’s meeting discussed the centres’ work programme for 2012 in the context of the current European political scenario. Delegates exchanged ideas on ways to improve working practices and to enhance the added value of Europe Direct centres.
